Enontekiö is fast becoming a biking destination, its wild fell highlands laced with year-round trails reached from downtown Hetta. Summer offers gravelled forestry roads, sandy heaths, old German-built wartime routes and duckboards across vast wilderness. Winter opens a huge network of snowmobile trails.

Over 200km of true wilderness trails await. Some are unmarked and demand an adventurous soul, others are easy to reach once you know where they are. Since the Pallas-Ounastunturi National Park opened to bikers in 2017, everywhere except the Malla Nature Reserve is open access, though good routes are scarce across the larger wetlands and the Yliperä fells in Kilpisjärvi.

To rent a bike, pick an easy-access route from our 'Biking in Enontekiö' pages: the Hetta-Näkkälä trails (26 km), the Kalmakaltio-Pöyrisjärvi-Näkkälä trails (c.93 km), or shorter runs from Näkkälä to Pöyrisjärvi (c.18km), Kalmakaltio to Naltijärvi (c.20km) and Hetta to Sonkamuotka via Muotkajärvi (c.30km). Metsähallitus maintains wilderness cabins at Pöyrisjärvi and Naltijärvi, with cabins for hire at Pöyrisjärvi. Prefer a guided tour? See our summer and winter routes.
