Health Services
The health centre, home to the dentist's office, opens normal working hours, Monday to Friday. A standard EU health card gets you the doctor or dentist at the same cost as a Finnish local. Basic bloodwork happens here, while more complicated tests go to Muonio (100 km) or Rovaniemi (300 km).
The veterinary clinic opens weekdays c. 8am-4pm, with vets on call in the evenings and roughly every third weekend. Physio Hetta offers osteopathic massage and kinesiology taping after a day outdoors.
Other Amenities
The library, on the left of the school building (follow the 'Kirjasto' signs), opens Mon 12-7, Tue & Wed 10-4, Thu 12-7, Fri 10-4. Join with a current Finnish address, no ID needed, and borrow freely for 4 weeks at a time. There is a small English selection, and a library bus visits periodically.
The launderette is in the second block of the shopping complex on the road to Norway. The municipality building downtown, almost opposite the 'red shop', has free wifi, power points, sofas and a public PC. One bank in the centre has an ATM outside. The main petrol station is at the post office. A second, at the junction to Norway, is among Finland's most expensive but stocks useful outdoor items. Two main garages serve the town, plus a garage at Palojoensuu and a fuel point in Palojärvi.
Polar Lento: Flying Service
Polar Lento has flown customers around the Käsivarsi region for more than 30 years, reaching the fell lakes of Käsivarsi and Swedish Lapland, some of the best fishing waters and finest hiking trails. They also rent rubber boats and canoes and fly visitors over the Kilpisjärvi fells.
