Veterinary Internships with Hetta Huskies
An approved BVA veterinary internship location - hands-on sled-dog medicine and the chance to run research projects with us.
Hetta Huskies is listed with the British Veterinary Association as an approved location for veterinary interns. The manual below was compiled by one of the veterinary students on our team, and most of our medically trained visitors are veterinary students.
- BVA-approved location for veterinary interns
- 3-month+ medical interns become the farm 'medical overseer'
- Shorter placements assist with basic medical jobs
- Research partnerships welcome (nutrition, lactation, heat regulation, etc.)
The medical role
Interns staying at least three months usually become our 'medical overseer'. Shorter placements assist the overseer with basic jobs needing no knowledge of individual dogs, teeth cleaning, nail cutting, dog checks, heat checks and heart checks. Even future medical supervisors complete the trainee guide-training course, so they can run safaris in season as full members of the team.
Research opportunities
We are keen to host student research or share our collected data. Topics that interest us include nutrition, ulceration, hypothyrosis (anyone fancy blood testing c.170 dogs and linking occurrence rates to family histories?), lactation in pack animals and its links to ovarian cysts and mammary tumours, stress flushing and heat regulation, and we would love to learn from massage and holistic care professionals. Material on the role and sled-dog medicine is in a dropbox folder, contact us for more.
