Hotels - Fellhotel Vuontispirtti
Parish-owned Vuontispirtti sits amongst the fells of Ylikyrö village, in the south-eastern corner of the Pallas-Ounas National Park, with ski tracks and hiking routes from the door and excellent mountain biking. It has 42 double and 4 single rooms, 10 cabins sleeping 4 each, apartments for up to 8, a camping and caravan site, café, buffet restaurant, souvenir shop and guide services.
Luxury Cabins & Wilderness Centres
Kalmakaltio Wilderness Centre, north east of Nunnanen on the edge of the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness, is a good hunting, fishing and cloudberry base (though it may be for sale).
In Kilpisjärvi, family-run Tundrea (in business since 1989) offers chalets and apartments with private sauna, full kitchen and free Wi-Fi. Villa Kilpisjärvi has three apartments: Halti (c. 85 m2, sleeps 1-8), Saana (50 m2, 1-5) and Malla (27 m2, 1-3). Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus, under Saana fell 6km from the Norwegian border, has 20 guesthouse rooms sleeping 2-4, 13 lakeside cabins for up to 4, and a famous 200-seat restaurant that began in 1937 as the Siilastupa.
Hostels & Cheaper Cabins
There is a good spread of budget beds between Hetta and Kilpisjärvi.
- Ketomella Cabins: wilderness cabins and catering just off the Ounasjoki river, with a central kota for groups
- Rajabaari Puranen: en route to Kilpisjärvi in Karasuando, a petrol station with café, restaurant, pharmacy, shop, sauna and rentable rooms
- Vikkurikosken Leirintä: 15km north of Karesuvanto on the Könkämäeno fishing river, with 2-, 4- and 6-person cabins (open 20.6.-30.8)
- Ropin Pirtti: by lake Naimakkajärvi, with cabins for 2-4 people and a café selling doughnuts (open April to mid September)
- Majatalo Haltinmaa: in Kilpisjärvi, semi-attached cottages for up to 6, Bosse's Bar and the Lapintyttö buffet (16EUR adults, 7EUR children under 7, free under 3)
- Saivaara Mökit: 52 m2 cabins with sauna in Kilpisjärvi
Camping and Wilderness Cabins & Cottages
Tent and caravan spots exist in Hetta, Nunnanen, Leppäjärvi and Palojärvi, with private cottages for rent in the same villages (Villipohjola is the main website for wilderness huts in Finland). Käsivarren Tunturipalvelu has three cabins near Karesuvanto on the Kilpisjärvi road, Suopursu, Lavijoen mökki and the modest Hukkajärven mökki, plus the Syväjärvi wilderness hut, and rents camping rooms by Saana fell in Kilpisjärvi, including a former roadworkers' apartment sleeping up to 12 with stunning views to Saana and the mountains of Sweden and Norway.
