A joik is a traditional song of the Sami people, each one meant to evoke a person, animal or place, deeply personal and often spiritual. Journey to Lapland without hearing joik and you miss something incredibly special.

The evening
Joik evenings take place in the heart of our farm, in our sound-proofed farm kota (or the dogs would surely join in). The performance comes before or after a traditional reindeer meal cooked on the central open fire, and the story behind each joik is told beforehand, a fine insight into Lappish life. Your artist, a local resident, joiked his way to second place in 'Finland's Got Talent' a few years back.

About joik
Some compare the sound to the chanting of Native American cultures or the shamanistic songs of Siberia, mimicking sounds from nature. Sami culture has no written language, so no one knows how joik began. Oral tradition says the fairies and elves of the arctic lands gave joiks to the Sami people, and music researchers count joik among Europe's longest-living music traditions.
