Life in Enontekio

You will learn how people live and have lived in Enontekio, and how the ancient herding lifestyle changed with the machines of the 21st century: the reindeer's life-cycle, winter fodder and how it reaches free-roaming herds, how herders know their own animals, and how families still gather for ear-marking and for sorting reindeer for culling or deworming. Expect surprises, from shoes insulated with newspaper rather than grass to why herders appreciate the dreaded summer mosquito.

02

Feeding the reindeer and the lasso

A highlight is feeding some of the reindeer and meeting the babies in the corral. Everyone also sees a lasso demonstration and gets to try a throw themselves.

03

Lunch in the Kota

In the Kota, a Lappish cottage, hot drinks and a lunch of reindeer sausage, Lappish bread and salad are served around an open fire, with dried reindeer meat to taste (a vegetarian option is available upon prior request) and more talk of Sami culture and reindeer husbandry. Reindeer skins, antlers and meat are for sale.
