Downhill skiing options around Hetta, from the family-friendly Hetta ski centre to the larger international resorts at Levi and Ylläs.

Northern Finland's ski centres will not rival the Alps, but there is enough to entertain a proficient skier for a day. The three main centres within reach are Hetta, Levi and Ylläs.

Downhill Skiing in Hetta

The Hetta ski centre (signposted Hetta Hiihtomaa) sits beside the Nature Centre and has run since c. 2010. Family focused, it is a fine place to learn, rebuild confidence or practise carving and telemarking, for which the slope steepness is perfect.

  • Runs: one lift and 2 runs open, plus a 100 metre slope and sledding hill for children
  • Lift: the T-bar runs 580 m over 105 m of altitude
  • Slopes: slope 1 is 600 m long and slope 2 is 750 m, and both carry jumps and rails for skilled skiers
  • Off piste: a small forest section offers technical off-piste practice, though Pyhakero or Kilpisjarvi are better for true off piste
  • Also on site: a children's slope, illuminated ski tracks (10 km), snowshoe tracks and a snowshoe frisbee golf track
  • Lessons: Anna and Pasi can teach all levels outside peak husky season
  • Prices: ski rental is around €10 for 3 hours and lift passes €15 for 3 hours

Nearest International Ski Centres

Levi, c. 2 hours drive SE of Hetta, is one of northern Finland's bigger resorts.

  • Pistes: 45 colour-coded pistes covering 43.6 km, from blue beginner runs through red to black expert terrain, with green transition routes, though not every piste opens all year
  • Lifts: the fell is served by 2 gondolas, 1 chair lift, 14 T-bar lifts, 6 stick lifts and 4 rope lifts for children
  • World Cup: Levi hosts the Ski World Cup, and the World Cup Run is open all season
  • Prices: ski rental is around €23.50 for 3 hours and lift passes €15-€30 for 3 hours depending on the time of year
