Hetta Huskies' own wilderness cabins and traditional farm kota, used as refreshment and overnight points on winter safaris and available for rent in the off season.
Our family owns a number of wilderness cabins used in season as refreshment stops or overnight points on winter husky safaris. At other times of year, one or more may be available for weekly rent, or for an overnight stay as part of a hiking or kayaking journey.
- Traditional Farm Kota - sleeps 6 (+guide), expandable to 9, rustic but heated, half-board with Lappish meal
- Palojoki River cabins - two cabins sleeping 3 and 8, wilderness sauna, great for paddlers
- Lake Ounasjärvi cabin - sleeps 2-4, wood-burning sauna for up to 8, shallow swimming beach
- Kellotijärvi cabin - sleeps 9-11, perfect for fishing
- Tarvantojoki River cabin - off-trail, sleeps 12-16, far from anyone else
Traditional Farm Kota
Our traditional farm kota is a circular building with a central fireplace, ringed by mattresses on reindeer-skin-covered benches. It hosts the night before a multiday safari and the first night of our 3- and 5-day tours, and outside the season you can stay for a behind-the-scenes look at a working husky farm.
Rustic but comfortable, it has underfloor heating, charging ports, water for hand-washing and a toilet c.200m away, though no running water or shower. Sleeping bags and liners are included, and as the kota sits amid a farm of c.200 dogs, a guide facilitates your stay and sometimes sleeps over.
Half board means a traditional Lappish meal cooked over the fire, reindeer or locally caught white fish, then squeaky cheese or baked bananas, plus continental breakfast. A guided farm tour is included, with the chance to walk old dogs on our 2km forest trail, brush dogs or help with feeding. Check-in is after 4pm, dinner by 7-7.30pm. The kota takes 6 clients plus a guide, though three singles convert to doubles to sleep up to 9.
Wilderness cabins on the Palojoki River
Two small cabins sit side by side on an ox-bow of the Palojoki river, roughly mid-way between Leppäjärvi and Palojoensuu. The smaller sleeps 3 and is mainly used by guides in winter, the larger sleeps 8 and hosts overnight client groups. A wilderness sauna, wilderness toilet and log shed complete the site, and paddlers find it a great overnight stop.
Cabin on Lake Ounasjärvi
Owned by Pasi's parents, this cabin sleeps 2 in comfort with bed space for 4. One room serves as living and sleeping space and as changing room for the wood-burning sauna, which holds up to 8. A log shed, wilderness toilet and outdoor laavu complete the property, the shallow beach is perfect for small children to swim at, and you arrive by boat or on foot.
Cabin at Kellotijärvi, on the Muoniojoki River
The main cabin sleeps 4-6 in two rooms, an adjacent building has bunks for 4 more, and the sauna building holds an additional single bed, so a group of 9-11 can sleep here. It is a perfect fishing base, available for weekly rent in summer (and in winter, if you cover the cost of the snow-work needed to make it accessible).
Cabin on the Tarvantojoki River
This beautiful old Nammalakuru cabin and storage building sits in the middle of nowhere, between Kultima and Kuttanen on a bend of the Tarvantojoki River, an off-trail walk of c. 5km in summer, so you need to navigate well to find it. Sleeping 12-16, it is a great spot for fishing, berry picking or simply being far from other people. Contact us for more information.
