A season-by-season calendar of Enontekiö's festivals, races and traditional Sami events - from reindeer racing to ski marathons and Christmas markets.
Events of interest to visitors take place across Enontekiö throughout the year. They are grouped here by season.
- Marianpäiväit (St Mary's Day) - Lappish culture celebration since the 1500s, late March
- Hetta Music Festival - mid March
- Sami Ski Race Hetta to Kautokeino - 90km, with 30km and 60km stage options
- Lapponia Ski Marathon - up to an 80km Hetta to Olos finale
- NUTS Midnight Sun Trail Run - 125km or 55km ultra, end July
- Hetta Summer Triathlon - c. 12km bike, 8km run, 2km paddle

Spring Events in Enontekiö
Marianpäiväit (St Mary's Day): a celebration of Lappish culture by Sami and Lapps, held annually since the 1500s at the end of March, right at the close of the main tourism season. Once a gathering time for baptisms, births, burials and trade, it now features reindeer racing (part of the event since the 1940s), lasso throwing, musical evenings, a Lappish handicraft market, Sami theatre and films.
Hetta Music Festival: concerts and choral evenings in the church and other venues across Hetta each mid March.
Hetta Snow Adventure Week: for 10 weeks of the year the area's companies offer their products in a fixed weekly programme.
Enontekiö's Ice Fishing Week: the last week of April, with contests across the municipality, including the infamous 'Only Two Fish' competition in Kilpisjärvi, which draws thousands.
Reindeer Separation: one final vaccination and separation, normally April, which those with local connections may be invited to witness.
Sami Ski Race: an increasingly popular race from Hetta to Kautokeino, 90km across the tundra, with shorter 30km and 60km stages between Hetta, Näkkälä and Kautokeino.
Lapponia Ski Marathon and Ski Week: a couple of hundred kilometres of ski tracks in beautiful Olos, Muonio, finishing with an 80km race between Hetta and Olos (or 40km from Kerässieppi).
Frostkade 500: a route through Norway, Sweden and Finland in some of the coldest Arctic months. Full GPX data and waypoints are supplied, and participants must carry the relevant maps and a backup GPS device.
Summer Events in Enontekiö
Reindeer Ear Marking: a traditional Sami event up on the hill fells in the summer villages, by invitation only, and unforgettable if you are asked.
Summer Market: the area's businesses present their wares over three days at the end of August.
Hetta Summer Triathlon: at the end of the Hetta Outdoor Week, normally end July / start August, with c. 12km of biking on tarmac and forestry trails, c. 8km of xc running and a 2km paddle.
NUTS Midnight Sun Trail Run: a trail ultra in scenic Ylläs-Pallas National Park at c. end July. Choose the demanding Ylläs-Hetta (125km, 9 fells, over 3800m of ascent) or the Pallas-Hetta (55km). Finish and race centre in Hetta village.
Fly Fishing Contest: annually in Karesuando at the beginning of August.
Mid-summer Skiing Festival, Kilpisjärvi: tens of skiers gather at Saana fell for a traditional Midsummer ski on a short prepared track of snow, now in its c. 70th year.
Autumn Events in Enontekiö
Arctic Sled Dog Guide-training Week: our autumn training week, generally in October, for anyone wanting to learn the art of working with and training sleddogs, as a hobby or professionally.
The Full Moon Art Night: once a year, normally mid-October, with music, poetry, literature and handicrafts.
Väätipäivät: presentations on local life skills, business products, villages and organisations, plus evening events. Residents, leisure-time residents, neighbours and visitors are all invited.
Winter Events in Enontekiö
Reindeer Separations: traditional events held around the area in the winter months, particularly December and January. Attendance is by invitation only.
Christmas Market: local craftsmen present their wares in the village school over two days at the beginning of December.
Frostkade 500: the same three-country route in the depths of winter, navigated by GPX on ski or snowshoe, with backpacks or pulks for gear.
